1. Define Reality – For Jobs it was to define reality as a future when everyone would have their own personal computer and then beyond that personal phone/internet/iPod. For Musk it was to declare that cars would run on electricity and that private enterprise would take over space travel. With regard to leadership, we believe that DefiningthatReality would be leadership that people can trust, have confidence in, feel safe and have respect and admiration for (vs. distrust, doubt, fear, disrespect and embarrassment) and we believe is the most pressing need in the world today.

2. Declare Intention – For Jobs and Musk it was to declare their intention to make that reality of personal computers and electric cars a reality. For leadership of the future, it is a declaration to identify, discover and develop leaders who embody what follows below.For us, it is to not rest until the leaders that organizations and the world need are in positions of leadership to make the world safe for humanity.

3. Decide Strategy – For Jobs and Musk it meant to attract, assemble and coordinate the best and most talented people to make the above reality occur, which usually includes bringing in a Tim Cook in Jobs’ case to manage people and other operational imperatives Jobs was awful at. Or a Mark Zuckerberg to bring in a Sheryl Sandberg (whose fading into the background as of late has revealed a more reckless side of Zuckerberg). Regarding Musk, it may be that his profound respect for the pure brain power of the engineers his companies rely upon causes him to be more decent with them. Jobs had a similarly hands off approach after he bought Pixar because of his regard for the sheer creativity of people like John Lasseter and creative leadership of Ed Catmull. For us, it is to identify, develop and grow the leaders that will safely guide organizations through the current crises and into a safe and successful future.
