Objective
Dr. Mark Goulston is a Board Certified Psychiatrist, Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and has been named one of America's Top Psychiatrists three times by The Consumers Research Council. For over twenty-five years, he was a professor of psychiatry at UCLA's Neuropsychiatric Institute and is an accomplished #author, keynote #speaker, #writer, and #podcaster. Goulston has trained hostage negotiators for the FBI and been a consultant to organizations like Disney, Cisco, IBM, FedEx, LinkedIn, Accenture, Costco, Goldman Sachs, and Merrill Lynch. [1]
Goulston has authored nine books and sold 400,000 copies worldwide. His book, Just Listen, ranked #1 in six Amazon categories, has been translated into 24 languages, and became the basis of a 2010 PBS special. [1] He has appeared on Oprah Winfrey, CNN, The Today Show, PBS, Donahue, etc.
Goulston's column Solve Anything with Dr. Mark is nationally syndicated by Tribune Media Services. He is a #blogger for the Huffington Post, Psychology Today, Fast Company, and Business Insider, contributes to the Harvard Business Review, and writes a syndicated column for "Biz Journals".
Goulston dropped out of medical school twice for what he now sees was untreated depression. In his early practice, one-third of his patients were suicidal. He provides a kind of mediated catharsis.
He's a #father to three children and #LA-based where he lives with his wife.
Subjective
I was first introduced to Mark by Cynthia Johnson when, while at lunch, I recommended she read one of his books; she responded by connecting us. Days after we met, Mark offered an introduction to David Carrico which later resulted in my role at PrimeMind. Beyond his wealth of experience and insights, Mark is kind, considerate, and a powerful advocate for mental health.
Mark also once rented his master bedroom to McLovin for the filming of Superbad.
Projects
Surgical Empathy, a practice of precise awareness cultivated and taught by Dr. Goulston.
My Wakeup Call podcast, interviews discussing and reverse engineering "wake up calls".
StayAlive, a 72-min documentary on suicide prevention.
Reflections
"Mark has a clarity of laser-like insight that would be painful, if it weren't for the fact that it is spot on and because he makes it safe, unavoidable, so it can be dealt with." ~ Warren Bennis
"I've known Dr. Mark for 5+ years and every year it becomes more challenging to constrain his magic with words. His immense knowledge and expertise is evident in his ever more prolific writing and speaking on public channels and at private venues. Yet, his intellectual capital is only surpassed by his spiritual capital. His innate ability to attune empathetically has been a catalyst for growth personally, professionally, and—now—relationally as Dr. Mark just saved a "business marriage" with a single conversation. I surely cannot recommend Dr. Mark enough, but I'll continue to try every day of my life. Thank you, Dr. Mark." ~ Brian Swichkow
