Mythos

The Gif Shop is a #niche-site featuring an animated catalog; later dubbed as "Harry Potter's SkyMall." [1] The #ecommerce-store was built with @Shopify as an #affiliate-site and features products with unique visual movements—generating revenue through referrals. [1] The catalog, designed to prompt @Instagram-like fixation, has an average page size of 58 mb and thus—by all common logic—should be too slow to be usable. Yet, when launched on @Reddit, the site attracted 156K unique visitors within the first 24-hours and had a 2.8% conversion rate. After 72-hours — the lifecycle of our affiliate cookies — we had made $62. Our best estimation was that it would take about 20 hours per week over six months to scale revenue and outsource management for it to become a self-sustaining project. At the time, in 2015, it made more sense to put it on the back burner.
