Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is a psychological condition resulting from prolonged or repeated exposure to traumatic events, often occurring in interpersonal relationships or situations where escape is difficult. It is distinguished from standard PTSD by its origin in chronic trauma, such as ongoing abuse, neglect, captivity, or entrapment. Individuals with complex PTSD may experience symptoms common to PTSD—including flashbacks, hypervigilance, and emotional numbing—as well as additional difficulties in emotional regulation, self-perception, and relationships. The diagnosis has gained increasing recognition as research expands on the nuanced ways chronic trauma impacts the mind and body. Related concepts can be further explored through trauma-informed practice and @Attachment Theory, which provide frameworks for understanding both the impact of trauma and pathways to healing.
