Reddit Art, or Ads as Art, is the creation and purchase of Reddit Advertising as a means of artistic creation. In January of 2019, Ali Spagnola told me "art is art if the creator calls it art" and a week later, when I ran out of swipes on my dating app, I created Stoned and Single (advert); purchasing Reddit ads to show my dating profile to women in Los Angeles. It hit 800 upvotes, was seen by 140k people, incited laughter, and only cost about $110. With my Facebook Ads Prank from 2014 being a legend among friends, I was encouraged to keep going and created a portfolio of ads and web of stories.

Origins

The frame of 'reddit art' materialized from Ali Spagnola's prompt, that "art is art if the creator calls it art." A week after, in Art And Evangelism (newsletter), I declared myself an artist and, later that night, Stoned and Single (advert) was born. The attention it garnered, in part, prompted John Zdanowski to later say "I'd fund that" in response to Aligning Your Spirit (newsletter) three weeks later.

Around that time, I was reading The Ascent of Humanity by Charles Eisenstein. In the chapter titledWork and Art United, Eisenstein ponders the demolishment of "our culture's basic dualisms: work and art, work and leisure, utility and beauty." Later, he speaks of Storyteller Consciousness; the conscious awareness that the stories we tell create the reality we see. Seeing myself as an "entrepreneur" for many years, these frames—and much of that book—manifested my connection to the label of "artist".
