Objective
A subreddit is a sub-community on Reddit which is dedicated to the discussion of a particular subject—ranging from broad topics like r/technology and r/gifs to specific topics like r/teslamotors and r/startledcats. Users vote on the content submitted to each subreddit based on its merit within the discussion—often a measure of its relevance, uniqueness, cleverness, etc.
Each subreddit's submissions feed into #reddit's r/all and are thus able to reach the front page of Reddit—the most popular of the Democratic Platforms.
As of 2018, there are 1.2 million subreddits—50,000 of which are considered to be active.
