Mythos

Foursquare is a location technology company and data cloud platform founded in 2009 by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai in New York City, United States. The company initially gained recognition through the launch of Foursquare City Guide, a mobile app that popularized real-time location sharing and the concept of checking in at venues. Over time, Foursquare expanded its offerings to include various consumer apps and enterprise products built on its robust database of location data collected from billions of user check-ins. Its technology has played a significant role in shaping trends around location-based services and social discovery within the tech industry. I fell in love with Foursquare when I was living in @Burlington, VT, drawn in by the playful competition that emerged among social media regulars of the day. My friend Cam became the “mayor” of several places around the city as I rotated between co-working spaces, networking events, and business meetups. What I appreciated most was the @Merit Badging system—the thrill of unlocking a new badge, especially when the requirements were shrouded in mystery. It wasn’t just about the points or digital accolades; it was the sense of discovery and the social game layered over everyday movements that made those early days of social media feel vibrant and alive.
